What is balance? How you can find your balance and start achieving your ultimate goals.

Balance. A term you hear floating around in the fitness industry all the time. So many people are seeking that ultimate goal of living a “balanced” lifestyle. But truly, what does that even mean? Does balance mean being shredded while occasionally stuffing your face with Oreos? Does balance mean being able to go out and enjoy social events with friends and family without the associated guilt? Or does balance just mean finding a place where you perform well, eat well, and live well. Balance to me is a funny term because it is so opposite of so many of us in this bodybuilding world. Many of us are Type A and operate under an all or nothing mentality. We put our bodies through hell to step on stage for 10 minutes of recognition. Weeks and weeks of preparation, specificity, perseverance, blood, sweat, and tears (most often not even an exaggeration) for 10 minutes or less of time on stage. We obsess over our meals, timing, morning cardio sessions, supplements, rest, and recovery. All of this being said, you still hear the idea of balance being thrown around like the latest fad diet or body trend.

So, how do you determine what balance is for you? It looks different on everyone. Don’t get me wrong, I am fully on board with some of the recent trends around self-love, body appreciation, and living a healthy lifestyle. I myself can often get hung up with being neurotic about tracking my food intake and macronutrients and stress over potentially missing a workout or a cardio session in the offseason. Balance is hard for me. I am so programmed in the competition mindset that the offseason becomes much harder. In prep I know exactly what I need to accomplish, blinders on, no other option but to get it done. In the offseason it is incredibly difficult to determine when to say fuck it and go out to eat with friends or skip that extra cardio sesh to spend extra time with family without completely derailing the long term goals.

Obviously there are serious conflicts in what balance really means and how to apply the idea in real life. My takeaway here is that balance is not easy. It takes work, it takes practice, and it takes time to cultivate the skill. For me, personal development is just as important as physical development and training progression. I am striving towards living a happy, healthy, and meaningful life. Both in my long term competition goals as well as relationships, business ventures, and education. Continually progressing forward in this game of life. At the end of the day I know that balance is something that should come easily but is actually quite difficult. And you know what? That’s okay.

So cheers to this New Year and moving the needle forward. We are all in the same journey – to become just a little bit better each and every day. If you can make a 1% improvement each day, it adds up to bigger longer term achievements that will truly change the trajectory of your future. #GetAfterIt
